Divorce and custody counsel for Centennial.
Centennial has the courthouse inside its own city limits and my office ten minutes away. The files I see from Willow Creek, Foxridge, Piney Creek and Heritage Greens are two-career files: a house with real equity, two retirement accounts, stock from a Tech Center employer, and children in one of two school districts. I try those cases at the Justice Center on Potomac.

What a Centennial divorce is usually about.
Two incomes, two 401(k)s, restricted stock or options from one employer, a house bought a decade ago that is worth twice what was paid, a 529 plan for each child: the Centennial file is less about tracing what came from where than about dividing what both spouses built, fairly and without a tax mistake. Colorado divides marital property equitably, and the increase in value of a retirement account or a house during the marriage is marital even when the account was opened long before. Retirement money is divided with a qualified domestic relations order, drafted correctly, or the tax bill lands on the wrong spouse; unvested compensation is divided by a formula that depends on when it was granted and why. I have written about both on Executive Compensation.
Centennial also has more owner-run businesses than it looks: a dental or medical practice near the hospital corridors, a contractor, a consultancy run from a home office. A company started during the marriage is marital even if only one spouse ever set foot in it, and the first question is what it is worth. Maintenance is the other question when one spouse out-earns the other by a wide margin; Colorado’s advisory guideline gives a starting point that is neither a floor nor a ceiling. Arapahoe County District Court, in town.
Centennial is in Arapahoe County, and the 18th Judicial District sits at the Arapahoe County Justice Center on South Potomac Street, inside the city — a few minutes from anywhere in Centennial and ten from my office in Greenwood Village. Since January 2025 the 18th District is Arapahoe County alone, after Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln left to form the 23rd, and what remains is one of the few metro courts with a truly dedicated family bench: three district judges who hear only domestic relations cases, one of them designated the presiding domestic judge, plus four domestic magistrates. Your first date is an initial status conference, run by a family court facilitator by Webex, and attorneys e-file everything. In my experience the magistrates handle temporary orders, mediation is ordered before nearly every contested hearing, and a contested permanent-orders hearing goes to a district judge unless both sides agree otherwise. The detail, and every other metro courthouse, is on the Denver Metro Family Courts page.

The bench. Since January 2025 the 18th District is Arapahoe County alone; Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln moved to the new 23rd. The domestic docket is a dedicated one: three district judges who hear only domestic relations cases, four domestic magistrates and a child-support magistrate, with four family court facilitators who run the initial status conferences by Webex. Attorneys must e-file in every case type.
Parking. Free surface parking in the lots around the Justice Center. Weapons and tools are screened out at the door, and food and drink may be inspected.
Help at the courthouse. Family court facilitators and a self-help center (Courthouse II, Room 131) serve the domestic docket.

Custody across two school districts.
Centennial is split between the Cherry Creek and Littleton school districts, roughly at University Boulevard, and a parent who moves from Piney Creek to the SouthGlenn side has changed school districts without leaving the city. Colorado’s best-interests factors include the physical proximity of the parents’ homes and each parent’s past pattern of involvement, and I build parenting plans around both, with the school, the drive and the exchange point written in, because the plan that is vague about Sunday night is the plan that ends up back in court.
